If Time Was Really a River
Words and Music Copyright Robert Edgar 1982, 2002
If time was really a river
It might wash my memory clean
If knowledge was a ray of light
It might warm my foggy dreams
As southern breezes sweep the sand
And palm fronds gently shiver
Time was never a river.
If I was all you needed
To allow your journey peace
And your borrowed mythologies
To disperse again, and cease
Than all the worlds you’d hoped to see
Would have silently retreated
How could I be all you needed?
(break)
Banana River, barrier cay
Storm clouds shadow scenes.
A red sun burns the water
And waves have tattered seams
Green oceans boil with foamy tides
Men-of-war approach the trees
Gray pelicans collapse and drop
Into their salty, swollen seas.
riverrun, past Eve and Adam’s,
On its waves the stars do lie,
The earth’s at home within its current
Southern breezes, blow by.
