My name is Anna Davidson. I am Ph.D. student in Plant Science and I also teach for the UC Davis Art Science Fusion Program. Additionally, I organize the Leonardo Art Science Evenings (LASERs) at UC Davis held every other month.
You were recommended as a possible presenter who spoke very highly of your work. It looks to be of great relevance to our audience so I am writing to ask if you might be interested in giving a 20 minute presentation on it for the LASER at UC Davis.
The mission of the LASERs is to provide the general public with a snapshot of the cultural environment of the Bay Area/Davis area and to foster interdisciplinary networking with an emphasis on art and science. Piero Scaruffi has been holding them at USF in San Francisco (odd months), Stanford University (even months), UC Berkeley (even months). UC Santa Cruz also has LASERS.
Every LASER has four presenters (from four different disciplines and as unrelated as possible), plus time for socializing and discussion. These short presentations for an audience of artists, scientists and generalists are followed by Q/A, which usually evolves into a lively discussion. Illustrious past presenters at other LASERS include Alvy Ray Smith (Pixar) or Alison Gopnik (UCB).
See the latest one http://www.scaruffi.com/leonardo/aug2013b.html and the whole series (since 2008) at http://www.lasertalks.com
It would be a pleasure and an honor to have you as a presenter; as a start up series, we have no funds to pay our speakers so giving a presentation would be on a volunteer basis. Other LASER speakers have told me they very much enjoyed exchanging with the other creative people on the program and in the audience so I hope we will be able to make up in fun and excitement what we cannot give in fees. Your presentation would be a great gift of sponsorship that would enable us to prove to other potential sponsors that this is lively series that deserves support.
Davis LASERs will occur once every other month; as we get underway each program will be finalized two-three months in advance. I have listed here a choice of 2 days as options for each month it will be happening. Based on the speakers’ availability (the most popular day) I will select the actual day for that month, then follow up with you in a timely fashion and let you know the final dates.
